The reason I have no hair!!

I ordered a pto sleeve to adapt a 1-1/8 in diameter PTO shaft to a 1-3/8 in yoke on a cutter. The customer gave me the measurement of the shaft and the measurement of the yoke and I ordered the right part to make it work. Today, he comes in and he tells me the exact opposite of the first description. The shaft is 1-3/8 in diameter and the yoke is 1-1/8 in . Now it is a $35.00 part instead of an $8.00 part. And I have freight on the wrong part and freight to send it back or my money is tied up in stocking it. This is the reason I ask questions to be sure I get the right part because it costs to much to correct errors. 15 years ago it would cost $8-$10 to get a part in and send it back. Today, It cost $9.50 to get it here and it will cost the same amount to send it back. As a Customer you should know what you want and when I ask a question know the answer DO NOT GUESS the answer. If you do not understand what I am asking. Ask me to explain it. I will be glad to take the time bcause I want you to get the right part the first time!!!!
Happy customers are good for business!!!!!

Cold Weather

Monday morning it was 21 degrees, Tuesday morning it was 16 degrees, Wednesday morning is was 16 degrees, Thursday morning it was 21 degrees, Today it was 24 degrees! A regular heat wave!!! Monday morning the pond did not have ice on it. Every other morning including this morning the pond has been covered in ice. Since we have had few days this week that the temperature got over 32 degrees the ground is frozen which probably is why the pond was frozen over at 24 degrees.
Last night I went and looked at a JD 3020 that a friend of mine is repairing. The owners son was pulling stumps with the chain hooked to the lift arms. He would back up to the stump, put it in a high gear and pop the clutch and let it run to the end of the chain. When it reached the end of the chain it would yank (and yank is the proper word) the front end of the tractor 6 to 7 feet off the ground. I think he is lucky to still be among the living. The lift stopped working somewhere in this assault. I looked at the control valve for the lift and pressure checked the lift piston and it worked. I pressure checked the control valve and could not get anything to work. It had a pressure valve that I could not open with 175 pounds of air pressure. It normally requires about 1700 pounds of pressure to open the valve for oil to go to the lift control valve. I then back pressured the valve and with the lift lever in the down position I could blow air through the return side of the hydraulic system all the way to the oil cooler in front of the radiator. I could hear it bubble in the cooler! I moved the lever to the up position which should have closed the down/return valve in the control valve. It didn't, I could still hear it bubble through the return side in the oil cooler. We pulled the control valve off and all the valve looked OK. We installed a used control valve I had on a tractor and everything went back to work. The only thing I could think that had happened is the wall between the high pressure incoming oil and the return oil had been cracked by the shock wave created when he hit the end of the chain. The repeated yanking on the lift had evidently beat a large passage out between the two oil passages.
The used control valve fixed the problem and made it an expensive stump pulling!!!

Parts Questions

I had a customer call and ask "Do you have Farmall mufflers" and I said "yes". Then he asks" How much are they??" . I say(biting my tongue) "What tractor do you want one for?"
I stock a variety of mufflers for Farmall tractors and the prices range from $20.00 to roughly $165.00. It depends on the model and engine size.
If you tell me what you are working on then it is easier to give you the right price and I can tell you if I have it in stock. This guy need one for a Super A and I had it on the shelf for $32.00 .

Parts Returns

Sometimes we have parts returned simply because I sold the customer the wrong part. Sometimes the customer will ask for a part for a JD 3020 and when it comes back I find out he had a JD 2030. Occasionally, he will even have a IH tractor ( his buddy said they are the same thing). Our return rate is like .25 percent of our gross sales which is pretty low. I know some used parts places are normally 6 to 8 percent on there returns. I get the most returns from people who come in and get a part and have not worked on their tractor yet!! The think they know what is wrong and buy a part and when it is torn apart something different is broken. So tear your tractor down to determine what parts you really need to fix it before you order or buy the parts you think you need, some of the parts we order cannot be returned. Some can be returned but there is shipping costs and restocking fees that have to be paid and this runs up your cost.
The Rental Uniform man was just here wanting me to try out a new soap to clean our hands. I now have a dispenser mounted in the restroom to dispense soap. It is a new product for them and he wants me to tell him if it is any good- to test drive it-However I know where this is going and it will have to be pretty cheap for me to buy it.

New Year!!

I hope all of you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!! Here are 3 new pictures to start the year off . Larry if you paint your tractor red you want have to worry about adjusting the valve settings. The other 2 pictures are of a MF 135 I purchased . It runs good ,cranks good, and has power steering. It is just a ugly tractor. I will probably part it out. The engine is a Perkins 3 cylinder 152 cubic in engine.

Manifolds and Rusty Bolts

Yesterday, I threatened to take the Red Wrench to a rusted up bolt on a manifold. Instead, I used a die grinder with a carbide cutting bit and ground on the nut a little and unscrewed the bolt. Here are pictures!

Manifolds

This is a manifold off of a IH 1086 tractor. I have it sold to a customer and I am trying to get the turbo off of the manifold. I have taken out all of the bolts except one and it will not loosen any more. This requires more than a hand full of tools and a hammer, this requires a red wrench. I have to take it to the torch to cut the bolt so the turbo will separate from the manifold.
We sell lots of different manifolds new and used for tractors. Call me if your tractor starts smoking from under the hood instead of on top of the hood!!

JD Hydraulic Pump

This is a used AR97872 hydraulic pump off of a JD 4020. It fits several other tractors as well as the 4020, 3020 5010,5020 and others.
I pulled this off to get some other parts off for a customer so I cleaned it up and pt it in stock. I checked it to be sure it pumps and it did pump oil. I do not get very many good used hydraulic pumps most of them have to be rebuilt(new control valve and new seals and whatever else it needs) We also have Reman Hydraulic pumps for sale.

Knowing your Tractor

Several times this past week I have had people order parts for their tractor. This is not unusual it happens every day. The phones ring and people need parts. Most people, well 95 percent know what they need. The other 5 percent will order a clutch plate for a MF 135 and when it gets here he has a MF TO35. They have different clutch plates that will not interchange. Or order a wiring harness for a Ford 4600, but when it arrives and will not work--- "well my buddy says it is the same as a 4600", but really it is industrial Ford not a 4600. Or he orders a muffler for an Allis B, but I know he is working on an Allis CA and I ask is it a B or a CA? He says they are the same thing. If they were the same both would be only a"B" or a "CA". They would not be the same tractor with 2 different names made in different years. Most of the time when we get the wrong part the customer has told us the wrong tractor. Or they answer our questions wrong. I have asked customers if they have 28 inch or 38 inch rear tires to determine whether their tractor is a utility style or a rowcrop style. The parts are different. The customers answer was 28 inch. When his parts got there they would not fit, so I ask again and the answer was 38 inch this time. There are other questions that are more difficult that we have to ask to determine what you have or what you need. I quess what I am trying to say is "If you don't understand what I am asking then you should say""I don't understand what you are asking" . I will be glad to tell you what you have to look at to determine the answer. This way you get the right part the first time!!! I do not expect you to know all the answers and I will help you be able to get the answers so I can take care of you.
This is about the right part the first time. It keeps my expense's down which keeps your cost down.
